Glean for DCCK!

What is Gleaning?

Gleaning is the gathering of leftover crops from fields after the harvest. It is used as a way to recover food that would otherwise go unused due to low market prices. Although it cannot be sold at market, the food is perfectly good to eat. Crop gleaning makes sure the food does not go to waste and is instead distributed to those in need.

How it Supports Our Mission

This summer and fall, we will partner with several nearby farms to harvest several tons of fresh produce.  Our trained chefs then incorporate these fruits and vegetables into the 4,500 nutritious meals that we distribute daily. The gleaning program helps us distribute fresh-picked food to those who have limited access to fresh produce. In addition to helping the community, farmers also gain because food donations are tax-deductible.

Details on Volunteering

The gleaning season begins in June and runs through the end of October. Trips go out on Thursdays from 9:00am to 11:00am.

Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the farms. Farms are normally within one hour of downtown DC.

Volunteer groups should have at least four people and must have their own transportation. Children, supervised by a parent or guardian, are encouraged to participate.

Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty, and please bring water bottles and sun block.
