on 04/08/2002 susanfromdcck just entered this room...
From Gary Silverman:: May 9th
From Susan, DCCK:: hello
From Susan, DCCK:: as for food I am fsting
From Karen@DCCK:: Gary, we are counting on people arriving
between 3 and 7, and then we're getting togethr in the hotel at
around 7 for a reception... I think just cocktails and snacks --
dinner is on your own on Wednesday.
From Susan, DCCK:: hi gary, where are you from?
From JaneKCCK:: What time do things start happening on
Thursday?
From Gary Silverman:: Community Foodbank of NJ
From Karen@DCCK:: Thursday morning, we have breakfast at the
hotel at 8:30 (continental) and then we have our first session
starting at 8:30.
From Susan, DCCK:: I am going to NJ tomorrow what part? Casey
just entered this room... aretha@abelcksorlando just entered this
room...
From Karen@DCCK:: Hello everyone! Okay, now that we have a
few here, let's get talking about the conference.
From Gary Silverman:: North..Hillside near Newark stop in
we'de love to show you around our facility
From Karen@DCCK:: I have just finished a detailed agenda,
outlining all of the sessions, etc. I am available to answer all of
your questions about the conference, so feel free to go ahead. TACK
just entered this room... JaneKCCK just left this room...
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Hi everyone..so everything is at
the Hotel, I was under the impression that we would be at DCCK daahh.
From Karen@DCCK:: Here are the best practices for chats: 1.
Please stick to the subject and 2. Please address each other
directly by saying "Jane... " then your question -- it reduces
confusion.
From Karen@DCCK:: Aretha, actually, some things are at the
Kitchen -- we have some tours on Friday and a some sessions for
graduates there.
From Casey:: Karen, As a training program only does it make
sense for me to attend all sessions? They all sound really
interesting and I am happy to be at all of them but just wanted to
make sure. TACK just left this room...
From Gary Silverman:: Karen will the students elected for the
scholarship be interviewed individually Steven@TACK just entered
this room...
From Karen@DCCK:: First Aretha -- yes, there will be
potential funders there. Kinda like scout, but not exactly. We
really want to focus on thinking about how we can work together
toward NATIONAL partnerships.
From Karen@DCCK:: Casey, YES -- attend all sessions. We're
gearing this program toward training programs in particular.
From Steven@TACK:: just say ing hello to everyone
From Susan, DCCK:: Karen if you need me to field question
just yell
From Steven@TACK:: Karen@DCCK can you send me a copy of that
agenda
From Karen@DCCK:: Gary, YES the grads will be interviewed
individually in a session designed just for that purpose. However,
that session is really going to be for graduates and trainees of the
Kitchen - we are going to try to have a video made of all of the
graduates' stories... I think it would be so powerful.
From JaneKCCK:: Karen, you said we'd be on our own for dinner
Wed. what other meals will we need to plan on?
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Karen, what should we bring,
that might helps us grow, or things that potential funders might
like to see.
From Karen@DCCK:: Steven (and all) -- I will be emailing and
sending the full agenda to everyone tomorrow... I promise!
From Karen@DCCK:: Jane, we are providing meals all day
thursday, all day friday (3 meals each day) and breakfast and lunch
on Saturday. You are only responsible for Wed night and Sat night.
GOod deal, huh?
From Steven@TACK:: thank you

From Steven@TACK:: thank you
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Karen, I love the video idea,
that was smart thinking!!!
From Gary Silverman:: karen who will view that video
afterwards, will it be used towards enticing more people into the
program or for funding purposes
From Karen@DCCK:: Aretha, great question. We are currently
compiling a list of things to bring. I would say you should bring
ANY and ALL info pertaining to your training program, your budget,
curriculum, etc. More to come, hold on....
From JaneKCCK:: Sounds like one of the best conference I've
heard of...for the $$$
From Casey:: Karen, do you know if anyone has planned
individual sessions with their senators? Do you think we should push
for such sessions or will the roundtable allow us access to them?
From JaneKCCK:: Could we get copies of the video for our own
recruiting?
From Karen@DCCK:: Gary -- the video would be given to each
program, to use at their will. I would guess people would use them
for funding, publicity, or maybe even as an orientation for new
trainees! How inspiring for anyone hoping to make it through a
training program...
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Karen, my graduate wants to know
"how she should dress," casual. What is the weather like in May?
From Karen@DCCK:: Casey, I really don't know about the
individual sessions -- I don't htink the roundtable will give you
individual one on one time with the senators -- but I think we will
come off strong. We can't arrange individual meetings for you, but
if you want to meet with your representative, call their office and
get on their schedule. This would be a GREAT way to tell them to
participate in the roundtable.
From Susan, DCCK:: Aretha, the weather in May is great
From JaneKCCK:: Good question Aretha. I was wondering if they
should wear chef clothes.
From Karen@DCCK:: Aretha, may will be 70s and 80s. I would
say business casual for the sessions --- pants and a shirt, probably
no shorts or anything. Semi nice, but nothing fancy.
From Susan, DCCK:: We talked about dress today, and business
casual is the key.
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Karen, could you fax or mail me
a copy of this chat. I think this chat alone is great publicity. I
would greatly appreciate it.
From Susan, DCCK:: Yes bring a chef's attire, but they will
not wear it for the entire time.

From Karen@DCCK:: I KNEW attire would come up! What do all of
you think about chef's coats? Should the grads and/or chefs wear
them?
From Karen@DCCK:: Aretha -- I will, if I can -- this one is
going so fast I can hardly capture it!
From Gary Silverman:: Karen the students and theyre
respective chefs in uniform will impact the entire function
From Karen@DCCK:: Gary, good -- I think I agree... I just
don't want them to feel too singled out or like we're "parading
them" or anything....
From JaneKCCK:: Chefs like to wear their uniforms!
From Gary Silverman:: Karen i've been a chef for 30 years and
i will proudly parade
From Susan, DCCK:: :-)

From Karen@DCCK:: I agree totally, chefs -- I have just had
some people say things to me differently, and I wanted to test the
waters.... I think the person who said it to me was thinking that
graduates might feel uncomfortable, not really the chefs. I agreee -
it's a proud, great thing, and I think it's totally cool. (I tell
Susan all the time that some day I want to earn myself a chef's
coat!)
From Susan, DCCK:: It looks like folks are talking a breath.
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: I don't want to offend anyone,
but some of the graduates might be nervous about some of our ideas,
they are not TV chefs. I understand the pride issue, but I think
Karen's right. We want them to feel proud, but this is about
"Kitchens Inc."...
From Casey:: How important is it to be at the Wednesday night
reception?
From JaneKCCK:: Karen, are there any other things we should
bring?
From Karen@DCCK:: Yeah, good -- I needed one!
From Karen@DCCK:: Casey -- wed night not important... come if
you can, but it's just a meet and greet.

want people to bring... we'll come up with a list soon.

From Karen@DCCK:: Meetings will go thursday 8:30 - 5:00,
Friday 8:30 - 1:00 (with tours of the kitchen and web site in the

From Karen@DCCK:: Aretha, how do you mean? What would we
contact them to do? I think it has potential... tell me more.
From Gary Silverman:: I have many friends from CIA i will ask
them
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Gary, cool!
From JaneKCCK:: Should we prep our student/graduates since
they are going to be spokepersons?
From JaneKCCK::
From Susan, DCCK:: To all I have invited people from marriott
corp, and other employers.
From Karen@DCCK:: Yes -- in the agenda are several questions
your grads can ask themselves before they come -- I think we'll even
send out a special graduate survey, to be filled out and brought to
the confernce.
From Susan, DCCK:: I have also spoken to professional
"trainers' so we can have the experts around us as well.
From JaneKCCK:: You guys are the greatest! I know how hard it
is to set up a confernce and it seems you've covered all the bases!
From Gary Silverman:: Karen great idea
From Casey:: Karen, have we notified people from the National
Restaurant Association about the conference?

From Karen@DCCK:: Hey -- a lot of these "great ideas" are
coming from you guys -- and beleive me, we hardly feel like we're
covering all of the bases. .. we're scrambling like eggs!
From Susan, DCCK:: Gary if you have friends at CIA please
contact me and I will send them information
From Karen@DCCK:: Jane -- Philip Morris is a KEY sponsor,
baby -- they will not only be represented, you'll be eating Kraft
products and drinking miller beer.
From Karen@DCCK:: Sorry, I'm getting a little bit punchy.
From Gary Silverman:: Karen later tonight i will be in a
chefs chat forum on aol and i will relay this info to whom ever is
on-line at that time
From Susan, DCCK:: That sounded like Robert Karen
From Casey:: Great, Gary. Good thinking!
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Gary, what is the name of that
chef chat forum?
From Karen@DCCK:: Hey, that's GREAT -- we'd love to have some
people at the conference who are employers or potential employers --
we're talking about job retentaion, too!
From Karen@DCCK:: Bye Steven, thanks for attending!
From Susan, DCCK:: Department of Labor, Welfare to Work, I
have asked a member from the Enterprise Foundation. Steven@TACK just
left this room...
From Casey:: Karen, Have you contacted any employers yet? It
sounds like they would be essential to the conference.
From Karen@DCCK:: Yes, we have some locals... other ideas are
QUITE welcome, though! YOu're right, totally essential.
From Gary Silverman:: Karen and everyone else i have to leave
. I will look forward to meeting you all in DC

generated businesses at all, i.e. Fresh Start?
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Bye Gary
From Karen@DCCK:: Take care, we'll see you in just 5 short
weeks! Be on the discussion boards -- you have great questions and
ideas....
From Casey:: I meant generating
From JaneKCCK:: Bye! I have to leave too. See ya in May.
From Gary Silverman:: Karen is it possible to get a print out
of this chat and send it to everyone
From Karen@DCCK:: Casey, YES! We will be talking about it a
lot -- during the funding session and the session on future trends.
We may even designate a luncheon specifically to the discussion of
rev gens.
From Karen@DCCK:: Gary, it will be up on the site, in the
discussion board, tomorrow.... you can then copy and paste or just
print it directly. JaneKCCK just left this room...
From Casey:: Great... this is something we are thinking of
doing so I really look forward to the discussions.
From Karen@DCCK:: To all who are left -- this has been a
WONDERFUL chat -- you all are giving me great hope for this
gathering... I think we will be so productive!
From Gary Silverman:: Karen thank you and good night
From aretha@abelcksorlando:: Karen, good idea, that's easier
than mailing it to everyone. I know everyone has their work cut out
for yallou.
From Karen@DCCK:: Night, Gary....
