From Len: Hi Neds !
From Len: Hey Lisa.
From Len: Lisa form SF ?
From Len: from
From lisa: lisa from A2H in south georgia...
From Len: Welcome. So it's warmer there..
From neda@dcck : so good to have you join us lisa...
From lisa: thanks...its terribly warm here...and I have terrible allergies...
REV.DR.Egger just entered this room...
From neda@dcck : by the way, i just want to wait till it's properly 3pm, so we give other people a chance to join in before launching into our oh-so-serious discussion on the conference
From REV.DR.Egger: That's the spirit...I turned 44 (forty-fortunate) this weekend...ate about 40 crabs and drank at least 35 bottles of champagne.
From Len: So I am not alone in the pre-4th festivities
From lisa: sounds like you had a ton of fun...happy belated birthday...
From Len: I mean, Happy Birthday !! I sent chocolate.
From neda@dcck : and hello to scott too... actually scott works right behind me, so i don't need to meet him in cyberworld, but he's agreed to help keep the transcript of this chat
From scottweier : Hello, everybody!
From Len: Hey Scott !
From lisa: hey scott....
From neda@dcck : okay, so hopefully others will be joining us soon... but i would like to ask... have you guys been keeping up with people/ideas from the conference?
From neda@dcck : or does it seem like a million years ago once you get back to your own kitchens and daily schedules?
From neda@dcck : i just want to make sure we keep some momentum going...
From Len: Devra and I have followed up on some things we promised to do when we got back, e.g. sent some SF housing contacts from TAC.
From Len: Technical Assistance Collaborative
From neda@dcck : and what about the training chefs Len? whatever came of that?
From Len: Also going to compile survey results from Chef/Trainer meeting and distribute
From lisa: I have kept up with everyone I met. I made some really great contacts!
From neda@dcck : that's wonderful Lisa!
From Len: It was a powerful meeting. Gay firth did an excellent job of handling the passionate Chefs
Terri just entered this room...
From neda@dcck : yeah, Len, i came in at the end of that, and it looked really great... did you guys put together an email list of chefs?

Submitted by Neda on 07/02/2002
From neda@dcck : hi terri!
From Len: The list and survey results are right here...
From Terri: Hi everyone. This is my first time chatting, so I might be a bit slow.
From lisa: hi terri...
From REV.DR.Egger: The Food Bank of Delaware is holding their partnership with Goodwill up as a model. I'm going up there to meet with some of the Goodwill hunga-mungas next week, along with some of the A2H crowd. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery?
From neda@dcck : Terri, where are you from? We've got Len from Nashville, Lisa from south Georgia, and the DC crew here right now
From Terri: Raleigh, NC
From Terri: looks like the south is well represented
From lisa: Robert....since I could not get you to speak at our fundraiser I had to pick second best and book Nathalie Dupree!
From Len: Terri how are you
From Terri: Doing well. We're between class sessions & I start vacation when I finsh up today.
From lisa: Vacation? Your food bank allows those?
From neda@dcck : excellent. Terri, we were talking about ways that people are keeping in touch/using ideas from the conference... but i would also like to know if now that you have had time to go back and process, if anybody thinks there was anything important missing from the conference...
From Len: Revdr: How does the partnership with Goodwill/good business operate?
From lisa: neda...it seems that traffic has picked up a bit in the dcck board....which is awesome. I have emailed and called several people I wanted to speak further with. I learned so much from the conference....I am still trying to get caught up!
From neda@dcck : yeah, lisa i'm glad people are back on the discussion board.. do you have any suggestions on how to get more use out of it? someone suggested i send out little email "alerts" when new topics are up...thoughts?
From REV.DR.Egger: Good luck with Ms. Dupree there Lisa...I'm sure she'll do you right. But let's try again sometime, please. Len--they provide references for the class is pretty much the extent of it. We'll see, when I get up there, what the national scene looks like for them. I think they'd probably be GREAT as a reference that we all can access, but I'm not sure about big time partners. But hey...at least Delaware is trying !!!!
From Terri: Neda: I thought the conference was great. I liked some of the suggestions from the training chefs workshop. If we can arrange some workshops for the future on non-culinary things we deal with on a regular basis. Some suggestions were recognizing & working with mental health issues, teaching methods (that work with our program), etc.
linda,ccsc just entered this room...
From Terri: I think an alert for the message board would be a great idea.
From lisa: I think email alerts might get to be a bit too much for you...but it might help generate interest till people get use to checking it on a regular basis!
From Terri: hey Linda.
From REV.DR.Egger: I like the idea....shall we get Neda on that ?
From scottweier : How about a weekly alert that summarize any recent activity?
From linda, ccsc: hi, everyone, sorry I,m late
From lisa: terri...i agree...a chef and social worker class would be great!
From neda@dcck : how much do you think would be too much, in terms of getting emails in your inboxes... would you like to hear from me once a week? once in a blue moon?
From lisa: hey linda!!
From Terri: weekly sounds good
From neda@dcck : i mean, i know you would LOVE to hear from me EVERY DAY, but...

Submitted by Neda on 07/02/2002
From Len: Terri, it would be great if you would like to join Devra, Gay, myself, Alison, and several others concerned with filling in the teaching methods and mental health needs. We are trying to form a support base for our kitchens that don't have the luxury of case mgmt services. I am fortunate to have access to "community mental health," which I will be glad to share with our network..
From neda@dcck : hi linda!
From Len: Once a week would be grand.
From REV.DR.Egger: Well. let's make it unanimous...Hi Linda
From lisa: I don't mind email. We utilize ours alot here. But for people who only check theirs once a week....
From Terri: I would love to. What's planned or when do we plan?
From REV.DR.Egger: Why don't we aim for aMOnday alert...what happen last week, what's coming up this week.
From linda, ccsc: case management is a big issue with us. we are making it a priourity with the next cycle of classes, I mean making getting a staff case worker
From linda,ccsc: I like a once a week alert
From Len: Monday alert good.
From linda, ccsc: Monday works, we'll just have it on our calander
From REV.DR.Egger: ok then it's Monday...what's next
From lisa: Hey guys...I am working on our training program. Do you find it easier to incorporate life skills with class time or separate them? I was thinking we would provide case management, and work ethics intensely for the first month, spend time in the classroom and then move into the kitchen for three months.
From Terri: Hey, one of the resources that came up at the conference was worknet. The book No One Is Unemployable & the workbooks they put out. Has anyone used these & which workbooks do you recommend? I checked the website & they have them in packs of 20, I'm looking for some info before I get that many.
From REV.DR.Egger: I think many use both...a class, but also pushing it during the culinary side also. We ask visiting chefs to talk about the culinary aspects of the week, but also touch base on the life skilss side, so trainees get a little of each.
From linda, ccsc: we find that we need some life skills in the classroom before going to the kitchen and then thoughout the training. we always find that we need to adjust as we go along to accomodate the needs of partifcular classes. For instance, we have such serious domestic abuse issues this time.
From Len: Lisa, depends on the attention span. Both.
From Terri: Lisa: we do lifeskills once a week for the first half of our session (11 weeks total) then move into job skills.
From Len: "Understanding the US biz culture" and "Overcoming Barriers"
From lisa: we currently have been operating a "welfare to work" type program and seems to be losing so many to drug issues, day care, and trying to get them to come everyday is a feat in itself...so, I was hoping to develop an intense approach...
From Terri: We spend more time on job skills after we finish ServSafe
From REV.DR.Egger: As for Worknet....the author, Debra Angel came to DCCK about 5 years ago and through a mutual friend, we were able to distribute about 300 of her books. They really imformed the growing network at a time when case management was new to all of us. That being sadi, I don't know if anyone really used the "process' in a big way...most just kind of absorbed her thoughts into their overall plan.
From linda, ccsc: we always have a budget workshop in the middle of the classes and anger management in beginning, job seeking skills at the end and self esteem all the way through
From Terri: Linda: what type of things do you do for self esteem?
From Len: Lisa: could you describe intense ?
From lisa: anger management was a great help after we incorporated it!
From linda, ccsc: we started this group with a drop out prevention class and feel really good about it
From Len: We start with stress mgmt, then anger, then biz culture, then barriers, then practice, practice, context, outside catering, employment
From linda, ccsc: we have professional counselors and we all (the staff here and our sister agencies) constantly validate, validate, validate the the students
From lisa: Len...well I suppose I mean life skills up front before the training...4 weeks of classes....budgeting, self esteem, anger management....attendance, work ethis up front. That way you have 4 weeks to sort out their issues before training begins and hopefully have a greater success rate.
From Len: Good point about trying to front load solution the issues.

From neda@dcck : this is a great topic to discuss... I would like to schedule another chat just specifically on this topic of life skills, and hopefully draw more people in...
From lisa: great idea neda!
From lisa: linda...do you have a reward system of some sort in place?
From neda@dcck : does anyone have any more direct feedback on the conference... what was most useful, etc.
From Len: The "90 minutes news from around the network" was a real departure from standard conference mode and very valuable as a group
From linda, ccsc: what do you mean by reward?
From REV.DR.Egger: As we seem to have been unable to really get a big bite out of DC (as in get elected reps to see what wer'e doing) should we take this conference on the road ? Natalie in Savannah is red hot to bring it there. What do you all think about that ?
From Terri: Neda: I went to the training kitchen stuff, didn't do any Kids Cafe stuff. I thought the job placement workshop was great. & I liked the format (roundtable & brainstorming major issues). I think it helps to hear what others have done
From Len: Let's do Savannah. In the winter...
From linda, ccsc: i'm all for taking it on the road, Glad you like the job development workshop
From Terri: Savannah works for me. I wouldn't complain about San Francisco either, but the board (keepers of the purse strings) might not be too happy.
From lisa: DC was kinda centrally located....Savannah might be kinda far for West coast people....of course...we would love to have you all in Valdosta!
From scottweier : I think it would be smart to take the conference on the road, especially because it naturally draws the largest proportion of people from the region where it's being held.
From linda, ccsc: Come to Charlotte in early spring and you will never want to leave
From neda@dcck : i think we just need to do a big community kitchen road trip where we all visit each other!
From scottweier : I'm especially curious about the Hawaii region ...
From Terri: I'm there
From lisa: savannah in June is hot hot hot....but beautiful!
From Len: Linda, we wouldn't want to leave anyway, if you are there...
From lisa: scott...I am with you!
From linda, ccsc: I want to see if they need any help in the Virgin Islands
From REV.DR.Egger: OK...then we'll begin exploring options, beginning with the tropics.
From Len: We could get VW busses, with propellers
From REV.DR.Egger: ok...this chat has officially gone into the deep end. I'm off, my fine feathered friends. love to all.
From lisa: Len...that is an image. The hippie community kitchen road trip...
From linda, ccsc: I wish had my VW bus from the hippie days, Len
From lisa: bye Robert...take care..
From Terri: As for workshops- how about one on cooking for the trainers or a cook-off? I think we could get a little competitive.
From neda@dcck : so, sorry to side track from thoughts of beautiful places... i have one more conference question: any other ideas on what types of sessions would be best for graduates... len and linda, did willie and jason feel they got a lot out of the conference

Submitted by Neda on 07/02/2002
From lisa: terri...I had thought about that idea....I actually had thought it would be cool to a
From linda, ccsc: I think competitive cooking would be great, I love to do that
From neda@dcck : oooh, a cook-off! i think scott would like to be a judge
From Len: I like the cook off idea...
From scottweier : You got that right!
From lisa: ...ok...lemme finish that though now....I had actually thought it would be cool to do a regional mini conference for chefs and chef trainers....
REV.DR.Egger just left this room...
From Len: Willie and Jason had the learning and travel experience of their young lives !
From lisa: neda...how many graduated attended? it would be neat to have a graduate cook-off to showcase their talents!
From neda@dcck : there were 8 graduates there
From linda, ccsc: Willie did get a lot out of it. He reported about it at our Alumni Association mtg. It helps the other graduates become aware of thenational connection
From Terri: Lisa: sounds good. It may help keep expenses down for groups that can't go cross counrty.
From lisa: neda...how can we get more to participate next year?
From neda@dcck : you know, i had sent out a bunch of emails saying there was $$ available for scholarships
From neda@dcck : but not that many people responded
From Terri: the regional idea may help more graduates attend
From neda@dcck : and a couple of graduates couldn't make it at the end
From Len: This is always puzzling to me...
From neda@dcck : that's true Terri...
From neda@dcck : yeah, i thought people would be jumping at the opportunity, Len.
From lisa: Terri...I was going to speak to our Exec.Dir. about having one here. I am working on my budget for next year....
From scottweier : Perhaps Neda's weekly email updates will spur more graduates to apply
From Len: Thanks folks. Gotta run...
From linda, ccsc: what's the next chat topic Len just left this room...
From Terri: One of our grads had a scholarship last year & backed out while I was waiting at the airport. It may be a good idea to see what keeps them from attending.
From neda@dcck : well i think I've asked the questions i've wanted... does anyone have anything else?
From lisa: maybe they are afraid to travel/fly....
From linda, ccsc: fear keeps them from attending. Thanks, Neda linda, ccsc just left this room...
From lisa: Terri...my email is lisa@valdostafoodbank.org...send me a quick mail...
From Terri: Does anyone know's on the A2H agenda for the national conference in Utah? Is anyone going?
From lisa: neda...thanks for today....i hope we can get more people involved and interested...
From neda@dcck : thanks lisa!
From Terri: Lisa I'm terrihutter@co.wake.nc.us I'll e-mail you when I get back next week
From neda@dcck : terri, i'm not sure about Utah...
From lisa: have a great vacation!
lisa just left this room...
From Terri: Thanks. I'm going to log off, too.
From scottweier : bye.
