Students,
Meet the Students!
Marquette University
Program is First Campus Kitchen to Pilot Year Round Culinary Job Training
It's not just new freshmen
and seasoned co-eds coming back to Marquette University this Fall. Thanks to
the Campus Kitchen at Marquette (CKMU), the school year now includes a full
Culinary Job Training program for unemployed men and women in the Milwaukee
area. While Culinary Job Training is not a new concept to The Campus
Kitchens Project (CKP) or community kitchen network, CKMU's efforts this
fall mark a major milestone: the eight men and women participating in this
Fall's program are part of the first Culinary Job Training program run
during the school year and working alongside the Marquette student
volunteers.
As each Campus Kitchen in
CKP's national network continues to grow and change, they have become intent
on continuing to meet the community and university interests and needs. For
the Campus Kitchen at Marquette, their two-year anniversary in October
brought about an interest from many partners in growing its successful
summer job training cycle into a year-round initiative.
CKMU Coordinator Erin
Yudchitz is enthusiastic about the program's goals and potential. On the
program's opening day, October 17, 2005, Erin discussed the inspiration
behind the new initiative, "Our goals are to increase CKMU's impact on the
community in several ways. We can empower more underemployed and unemployed
adults to reach their full potential through education and experience. We
can provide meals to additional clients and partner agencies, and we can
engage students in the process, offering an incredible new volunteer
opportunity to our volunteers and service learning students.”
The first training session
started October 17 and continues through December 21. The ten-week class
period, increased from eight weeks in the summer, allows extra time for life
skills development after the completion of the ServSafe exam during the
eighth week.
This new initiative
continues the history of innovation that drives The Campus Kitchens Project.
As CKMU implements this expansion, other Campus Kitchens look to how they
can implement additional programming, develop local partnerships, and
effectively utilize existing resources, while providing hunger relief and
opportunity to local communities.
