Campus Kitchens Prepare for Graduations of
CKP’s 6th, 7th, and 8th Classes!
The summer has been one
of long days in the kitchen and evenings of hitting the books for
seventeen men and women attending Culinary Job Training programs this
summer at our Campus Kitchens in Milwaukee, Saint Louis, and Minneapolis.
The eight-week training programs at each site provide an opportunity for
unemployed and underemployed men and women to learn the skills they need
for jobs in the foodservice and hospitality industry. Throughout the
summer, trainees spend classroom time each day preparing for the ServSafe
certification exam for foodservice managers; then apply their knowledge in
the kitchen preparing the meals for local Campus Kitchen client agencies;
then work on their interviewing skills, resumes, and life skills to
prepare for their next step into the working world. Local guest chefs
contribute to the effort too, teaching specific culinary skills to
trainees, while sharing their experiences in the foodservice industry.
The trainees at the
Campus Kitchen at Marquette University (CKMU) are no exception to this
rule. This year at CKMU, 8 unemployed women from the United Migrant
Opportunity Services will graduate from the Culinary Job Training Program.
With new skills in hand, 3 members of this year’s graduating class have
already secured jobs in food service industry as others make plans to
further their education. The graduation, which takes place on August 4th,
will signify the women’s successful completion of the 8-week training
program and their certification in safe food handling.
Are you in Milwaukee,
St. Louis, or Minneapolis? Come see these fantastic students graduate!

The Campus Kitchens
Project is an initiative on university campuses that utilizes shared
kitchen space, donated food, and the energy of students, faculty and
community members. Volunteers prepare meals on campus, and then deliver
them to agencies and individuals in the community. By pairing the meals
with services like tutoring, home visits, and mentoring, The Campus
Kitchens Project shows a commitment to the empowerment of individuals. To
