Fundraising
I have spent so much time trying to get funding, and chasing funders,
that I missed out on what would have been money in our pockets (so to
speak) I volunteered for an organization where we used there kitchen
for training. During the Christmas holidays, for two weeks straight,
they set up a table inside the mall (free of charge) and wrapped
Christmas gifts for shoppers. Volunteers helped the entire time and
they made over $13,000. I could not believe it! Of course we're doing
that next year. But, it made me think, we (my board of directors),
friends, family, who ever, has to come up with some fund raising
ideas. I know it sounds time consuming, but if you're a member of
United Way's Gifts in Kind program, they'll find volunteers for you,
all you have to do is coordinate. Would it be great, since we're all
chefs, (or we have something to do with the food industry,) if we
could have our own food show, and ask for donation of prizes as
incentives. Or ask these people who are having these Bridal Shows, if
they would be willing to give some of the proceeds to the kitchen, or
give us a free ad in their programs for catering or wedding cakes. The
ideas keep coming!!!

Here in Kansas City we had a Taste of the Nation event that supported
the local food bank. However so much of the proceeds went to Second
Harvest, they decided to do their own event called Forks and Corks.
Basically, they get local restaurants, wine and beer distributors and
food purveyors to set up tables of their fares while they all get free
publicity. This last year they had over 2000 people at $60/a head.
They also have a silent auction. This year they made over $100,000!!
Its a lot of work, but they all the coordination is done by a
committee that includes pro bono event planners and PR people who know
what they are doing. They also have a golf tournament that brings in
about $40,000. Kansas City is lucky to have several large corporations
and foundations that are very generous locally, however many are
interested in agencies that are planning entrepreneurial revenue
generating programs to help the become more self-sufficient.

I heard an article yesterday on a huge upsurge in people using online
donation tools to donate money to nonprofit enterprises. Reported was
the emergence of the Internet as a fund-raising tool for charities and
nonprofit organizations . In the last month, more than $100 million of
the money raised so-far for relief efforts has come from online
contributions. Did you all know that Kitchens, Inc. (that's us!) has a
great tool available that we can all use ? It's the HELPING.ORG
feature that you can add to your kitchen profile, and it works great.
Get a link on your kitchen profile by registering with Helping.org:
After registering, send your EIN # to Kitchens Inc. This service costs
absolutely nothing, and makes it very easy for people to send
donations.
