Best Practices | BP & FM | A Typical Day at Kid's Cafe

Submitted by Nancy Russman, Louisville Community Kitchen on 11/08/2000 The following is a description of a typical day at the Louisville Kid's Cafe:
  • Depending on the dish of the day, the cook arrives at least 1 to 2 hours before children are to be served to prepare meal.
  • As cook prepares meals, temperatures of refrigerators and freezers are charted.
  • At designated time, volunteers arrive to help with various tasks (setting tables, rolling silverware, helping with meal preparation, etc.).
  • At serving time the food is set up (some do buffet style, some do family style), a volunteer signs the children in (to keep track of the number of children served), temperatures of the food to be served are checked, volunteers are stationed to help serve the food, volunteers are stationed to pour the drinks, and a volunteer is stationed at the garbage can (to insure little food is wasted, and that items such as cups and utensils are not thrown away). After the children have eaten, volunteers help wash tables, floors, and clean the kitchen.
